First, let's see what's on the roster. Obviously, Microsoft has the biggest product with the most features, but the cost can be staggering to run with Microsoft year after year. Corel's Perfect Office product line-up is well refined, stable, and very attractively priced, but has failed to keep up in features with Microsoft. Sun's Star Office 7 suite is not bad and priced to compete with Corel. Open Office is derivative of Sun Star Office 6, but adds some features and is free. So, if you have basic office productivity needs and a tight budget, I would choose Open Office, or Corel. If inter-office collaboration is your thing and you have a fat wallet, then Microsoft Office is king.
