While the debate has been running for sometime over whether a DSL, cable, wireless, or satellite broadband connection is better for the consumer, the best technology isn't necessarily the one that will win. In my own opinion, cable transmission methods offer the highest and fastest possible communication medium and their lack of government regulation makes them capable of easily profiting from building their networks. The wild card though, is what consumers will pay for. When is broadband fast, cheap or convenient enough? Wireless offers the best convenience, but has limited reliability and a high cost. Satellite offers some convenience, but limited functionality and bandwidth. Meanwhile, DSL suffers from telecom regulations that have stunted its growth into faster systems. I think the money and the advantage goes to cable, but wireless LANS will be much more prominent. Imagine briefly, what would happen if every American owned a wireless access point. They could be linked together to form seamless metroplitan wireless LANs with much fewer hardwired Internet connections. That would certainly turn the access industry on its head.
