A lot of businesses are interested in DVR (Digital Video Recorder) based CCTV (Closed Circuit TeleVision) security systems. A low end entry in this spectrum for 16 cameras installed can be $6-$9k. This represents an installation cost most small businesses cannot afford and will never recoupe from lower insurance premiums. There are some alternatives that can bring hardware and software costs down substantially, leaving professional installation labor as the highest cost ticket item and making a 16 camera DVR CCTV system cost under $5,000.00 or roughly the same as a high end desktop and monitor combo. This is done using very reliable hardware and software, but eliminating market owners Microsoft and Digiview from the software and Sony from the hardware selection. Now there are Linux based CCTV applications coupled with newer hardware vendors than can reduce costs substantially without losing functionality.
